I’m Jason Green, aka Barber J
Owner & operator of Barber J's Barber Shop
My journey of becoming a barber began at age 15 when I gave my first haircut to my best friend. I found early on that I was destined to do hair. As I aged, I began to have a vision of what my own barber shop could be one day. After a few ventures in my twenties I realized that I could not rest until I owned my own shop. I found myself back in my hometown of Parowan, Utah. I quickly enrolled in Evans Barber and Cosmetology school in Cedar City, Utah and began my journey. After only a year of schooling, I seized a business opportunity and made a deal with a local barber in town who wanted to sell his shop and move on, I bought him out and began Barber J’s Barber Shop.
As the years went on I realized that I was unsatisfied with where I was as a barber. I loved what I was doing, but felt like I was lacking something, I started looking for opportunities to obtain my own space and create the vision that I had since I was 15. I was in my early 30’s at the time and I knew I needed to find what I wanted soon, otherwise I would be settling for less than I was willing to accept. I was informed of an old run down building a half block down Main Street from where I was leasing my shop. It had been donated to Parowan city who had decided to make it an incentive for economic development through a contest. They were going to award the building to the winner for $1.00!
After talking it over with my wife, we decided to enter the RUFUS building property sweepstakes. My dream was finally in sight! My wife Katie and I sat down and typed up our business plan and turned it into the city manager’s office. After going through the selection process, we were one of four businesses chosen to pitch our plan to the economic board of Parowan. We ended up being the business of choice! We immediately went to work salvaging many of the old building materials before tearing it down. We used all of the tin and wood from the old building to finish the interior to maintain part of the history of the original structure. With my vision, and my wife’s design expertise, what now stands is our incredible barber shop and salon with an interior retail store that carries premium barber and beauty products.
